With its front mane extending almost all the way to ground and curved tail, this splendid creature evokes earlier heavily stylized Scythian deer except for the absence of looped antlers. We are left to ponder the influences of art created by early Eastern Eurasian nomadic tribes on Chinese art and what exactly is uniquely Chinese in this creature. The deer is an important motif for the Chinese, symbolizing longevity and wealth and this lamp is one of many examples of oil lamps with animal-like motifs from the Han era found in Han tombs. These exquisite lamps also played an important role in court life. Aside from their decorative allure, they provided illumination and, with better light in the evenings, people were able to extend their period of activity and entertainment began to thrive. Both the form of horse and rider are carved exquisitely in an abstract manner allowing the natural grain of the wood to complete the idea. The end result is anything but simplified—highly stylized figuration. Many such figurines were finely carved and then painted to take on the attributes of their real-life counterparts; this one is more roughly carved. This work was excavated from a large tomb possibly belonging to a high ranking royal member of the Guangling kingdom.

Surviving the disaster of the Halifax Explosion , 6: The initial informal response was soon joined by surviving policemen, firefighters and military personnel who began to arrive, as did anyone with a working vehicle; cars, trucks and delivery wagons of all kinds were enlisted to collect the wounded. In the final moments before the explosion, hoses were being unrolled as the fire spread to the docks. Nine members of the Halifax Fire Department lost their lives performing their duty that day.
Tacoma was rocked so severely by the blast wave that her crew went to general quarters. Von Steuben arrived a half-hour later. All available troops were called in from harbour fortifications and barracks to the North End to rescue survivors and provide transport to the city’s hospitals, including the two army hospitals in the city. A cloud of steam shot out of ventilators at the ammunition magazine at Wellington Barracks as naval personnel extinguished a fire by the magazine.
The fire was quickly put out; the cloud was seen from blocks away and quickly led to rumours that another explosion was imminent. The confusion hampered efforts for over two hours until fears were dispelled by about noon. The overnight train from Saint John was just approaching the city when hit by the blast but was only slightly damaged. It continued into Richmond until the track was blocked by wreckage. Passengers and soldiers aboard used the emergency tools from the train to dig people out of houses and bandaged them with sheets from the sleeping cars.
The train was loaded with injured and left the city at 1:

The Beehive Inn, Earsdon Image: With this is mind we decided to head to The Beehive Inn. Part of the lure of the Hartley Lane pub is their secret garden, which is a lovely patch of green tucked away at the side of the pub. Outside the pub there are plenty of seats, but in the sweltering June heat we took refuge inside. On arrival, I was impressed by the old world charm — low, wooden-beamed ceilings and snug-like dining areas.
And it has a nice, homely feel with its wooden tables and chairs, scattered lamps and cushions. We arrived on the dot of 3pm and found ourselves in the main restaurant and were able to take in the atmosphere. It became an inn in and it retains all its old charm. The nooks and crannies and country pub feel instantly helped us relax.
So we sat at our table just next to the hatch where you get your drinks and walking to our table I caught a glimpse of the plates and they made me crack a smile, piled high with meat and veg. Our food arrived 10 minutes after ordering. Thick, creamy and hearty with a huge hunk of fresh bread and butter.

Gas Lantern Background A gas lantern is a lightweight, portable device that supplies bright, efficient light while protecting its contents from wind and rain. Rural dwellers and outdoorsmen alike have relied on variations of the modern gas lantern for roughly years, allowing access to barns, cabins, campgrounds, and wooded paths beyond the daylight hours. This style of lantern is more practical than its ancestors because it operates on the principle of incandescence—rather, it relies on light produced by heat.
The heated mantles in a gas lantern emit far more light than the flame of an oil lamp, therefore providing better visibility in a larger area. Mantles are chemically saturated fabric shells that, when heated by the lantern’s flame, become a powerful source of white light—up to candlepower, or the rough equivalent of a watt bulb. History For an untold number of years, the open flame was humankind’s only source of controlled light. Early ceramic lamps dating back to the Roman era were little more than earthenware pots with tubes to supply vegetable oil to a wick and spout.
Centuries of development attempted to master the potential of lamplight, employing variations of fuel and wick materials to boost efficiency, but it was not until the nineteenth century that scientists and inventors began to make vast improvements in light quality. By the s, a portable lamp had been developed using a pressure mechanism to force fuel oil to the burner. This concept, paired with the arrival of the first durable working mantle in , led to the modern styles of portable lanterns used during the last hundred years.
Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach is credited with the invention of the modern thorium mantle. Through his work with rare earth metals, Auer von Welsbach discovered that certain oxides would give off incandescent light when heated. Original Welsbach mantles came in the form of loosely woven silk fabric impregnated with magnesium and lanthanum oxides. This ability to withstand immense heat allowed it to emit higher levels of brilliant white light.

Share Now What is the issue? The European Union is currently considering new regulations on the sale of lighting fixtures that would come into effect in This is part of a drive to be more eco-friendly and reduce carbon emissions. However, most of the theatre lighting that is currently in use does not meet the new regulations. What does this mean for the industry? The regulations were initially thought to affect only tungsten halogen lighting, which is commonly used in theatre.
Designers like these lamps because of the natural and warm light they provide. However, it later became clear that even potential LED replacements for tungsten fixtures do not meet the required energy efficiency. The general opinion of manufacturers is that no lighting fixtures that are suitable for production lighting and able to meet the efficiency standard will be available by September That would leave productions and venues in the position of being unable to replace equipment with more efficient fixtures, because no suitable replacements will be available.
Even with the UK leaving the European Union, the supply of lighting fixtures from manufacturers would still dry up, as the UK market alone is not big enough to sustain production. What would happen as a result?

In-your-face stuff from an opinionated rural north Idaho housewife. Country Living Series Tuesday, December 18, Kerosene lamps Yesterday’s power outage brought to mind a small experiment we did last week. Just how long, we wondered, will a gallon of kerosene service an oil lamp? The answer has bearing on how much kerosene we should store for our non-electric lighting needs. Kerosene lamps are our preferred non-electric lighting option. We have flashlights and rechargeable batteries, of course, but those aren’t practical for working indoors around the house.
We also have some mantle lanterns Coleman and Aladdins , but for everyday usage, we figure we’ll use kerosene lamps. Some people are affected by the smell of kerosene, but the smell can be minimized if the lamp is lit and blown out while outside or in the garage. Nonetheless there is a detectable odor while a lamp is burning. It doesn’t bother us at all, but it may bother others, so if that’s the case, then pure lamp oil though it’s more expensive might be the better option.

Oil Lamp Collars Lamp collars are fastened onto the top of the oil fount. They are threaded and allow a burner to be attached to the lamp. They are generally made of brass, with the exception of some very early examples which were made of pewter. Collars can be plain, or decoratively embossed. Collars are generally “cemented” onto a flanged lip molded onto the fount. Some variations are pressed together or crimped onto the fount.
