I know there are some posts on speakers for Fender Twin Reverbs on this board already, but I don’t really feel that my question has been answered, so please forgive me if I bug you with questions, that might have been handled before! I recently purchased a Silverface Fender Twin Reverb in excellent condition according to the local amp guru but I am not really happy with the speakers. They are Fender stock speakers labeled 12T and I am afraid, those are the infamous and highly ineffective “Ox-Farts” as some people call them.
In fact the amp sounds nice at low volumes and played clean as long as there are no distinct transients in my playing which make it just “fart” with an unpleasant, fuzzy distortion. Using any kind of overdrive or distortion pedal just reveals this effect even more. What I am actually looking for is on one hand a true american Fender clean sound which in my opinion means a rich sound with warm round bass, tamed midrange and sparkling yet never shrill or biting highs.
On the other hand the speakers should be able to handle quite some overdrive or distortion and still sound warm and thick.

The first Fender solidbody model, the Esquire , lasted in name only from June to October This model name was replaced by the “Broadcaster”, which lasted in name only from the October to January All Broadcasters have truss rods, where many Esquires often have no truss rod. In Gretsch had trademarked the name “BroadKaster” for a line of drums. After advertising the Broadcaster in music trade papers in February 20, , Gretsch took notice and sent Fender a telegram asking them to change their name.
Therefore Fender was forced to drop the name Broadcaster. Starting around February 22, , Fender cut the word “Broadcaster” off of their headstock decals. These models February to summer are known as “NoCasters”. Silverface amps There is a lot of talk about modding a silverface amp to blackface specs. Click on the link to read more about it. Fender made some “blackface” amps in the early 80’s that aren’t really “blackface”. These amps have master volumes and sometimes channel switching which were NEVER features of vintage blackface amps. If you have one of these, then they are either the late silverface models with different cosmetics, or the hotrodded ones designed by Paul Rivera ie the 1×12 or 2×10 Concert, Super Champ, etc.
There are also some solid state amps that look “blackface”. Beware of someone trying to sell these to you as a “blackface” amp. They are decent amps, but not really what is generally known as “blackface”! My dates throughout will be a little vague, but are a good starting point. Fender started producing blackface AA amps in August ’63 I believe.

The source-date code on a pot is a 6 or 7 digit code impressed into the casing of the potentiometer. For speakers this code can be 5, 6, 7 or 8 digits long, and it’s ink-stamped or paint-stamped on the “bell housing” of the speaker. In either case, the code works the same. The first 3 digits on a pot, or the first 2, 3 or 4 digits on a speaker are the source or manufacturer code.
The remaining 3 or 4 digits are the date code. In 3 digit dates code, the 1st digit is the last digit of the year.

Much of this is due to an unefficient phase inverter circuit design. In build quality and component selection brands of caps, resistors, pots the silverfaces are not as robust as the blackface models. The glued and stapled baffles on the silverface amps is to us one of the bigger differences between the blackface and silverface amps, or should we say, the cabinets.
Still, many people consider the tone of the silverface Princeton Reverb just as good as the blackface. So, why would you want to enhance or mod a PR? So why increase the threashold of tube heaven? If you need a bigger amp on stage, go ahead reading below. Having that said, tone is not about volume.
